Aerial photography is the process of taking a pictures of something from an airborne position, whether it is an object or a place.

Equipment used to take the photograph might be hand held of mounted and the photographer may use an automatic or manual trigger for actually taking the picture. There are various different vehicles that may be used for taking the picture including aircraft, balloon, skydiver, kite or helicopter.

The first aerial picture was taken by a French gentleman by the name of Nadar in 1858 and he took picture of Paris in France. Aerial photography was used for military purposes in World War I and it was a guy called Fred Zinn that developed this practice.

Aerial photography has very broad use nowadays and there are a good number of fields that use it. These include Cartography (the drawing of maps), for surveys, land planning, archeology, environmental studies, movie production, advertising, espionage, conveyancing, and a lot of other areas as well. A lot of people like to buy aerial pictures of their homes as well as gifts or just for interest.

There have been big advances in radio controlled equipment and it is now possible for radio controlled aircraft to take aerial pictures whilst being controlled from the ground. This has been particularly advantageous for advertising and particularly homes, so that buyers can see the area their home will lie in when it is not yet built, and to give a realistic view of what it will look like.
